Get to Know Gauteng

For South Africa’s smallest province, Gauteng packs a big punch: from energetic Johannesburg, cultural Pretoria to the ancient history of the Cradle of Humankind.

The commercial heart of South Africa has a lot to offer visitors beyond business. Johannesburg is the country’s most cosmopolitan and dynamic city, with exciting nightlife, world-class museums such as the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill, and a vibrant arts and cultural scene, while gentler-paced Pretoria, with its avenues of purple flowering jacaranda trees, is home to South Africa’s version of the White House – the Union Buildings – as well as other historic monuments.

One of eight World Heritage Sites in South Africa, the Cradle of Humankind, is a must-visit: an area of cave complexes where 40% of the world’s human ancestor fossils were found. Here you can tour the Sterkfontein Caves where famous fossils were excavated and see their replicas in the Maropeng Visitor Centre.

(P.S. If you’re looking for affordable Gauteng holiday destinations, we’ve got some great travel deals for you.)

Why Gauteng?

  • Most international flights fly in to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, making this province very accessible.
  • Gauteng is a good base for exploring elsewhere in South Africa – game reserves, the beaches of KwaZulu-Natal or even nearby Mozambique.
  • Gauteng is small so it doesn’t take long to explore all of its highlights
