KwaZulu Natal Safari

The ultimate guide to your next KwaZulu Natal Safari

Get to Know KwaZulu Natal

Rising from a steamy Indian Ocean coastline to the chilly heights of the 3,000-plus-metre uKhahlamba-Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal is the most ecologically and scenically diverse of South Africa’s nine provinces

Despite being one of the smaller provinces in South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal’s wealth and variety of attractions is sufficient to keep you busy for weeks. Its urban centrepiece is Durban, which doubles as the busiest port in Africa.

This fun-filled beachfront city is steeped in cosmopolitan Zulu, Indian and British heritage. Stretching on either side of Durban, a beautiful 800-kilometre-long coastline incorporates dozens of low-key beach resorts as well as a primal mosaic of forested dunes, idyllic estuaries, hippo-infested lakes and offshore coral reefs protected in the iSimangaliso (St Lucia) Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

(P.S. If you’re looking for affordable KZN accommodation deals, we’ve got some great travel deals for you.)

FAQs about KwaZulu-Natal

  • Most lodges and hotels will have safes for your valuables either in your room or at the reception.
  • The local currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). There are numerous currency exchange outlets and the main credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Amex and Diners) are normally accepted everywhere.
  • Most petrol stations and toll roads take credit cards, but always have a small amount of cash on you for tips etc. Numerous ATMs can be found in all the big towns.
  • GMT +2
  • The best time to visit Ithala Game Reserve is during the dry winter months, from May to September. During this season it is easier to spot the wildlife since the grass is eaten by herbivores.
  • Expect to encounter and sight birds - such as Black eagles, lappet-faced, white-backed vultures, ostriches and secretary birds stalking across the veld, trees and mammals.
The best time to visit Royal Natal National Park is during the summer rainfall season of March to April.
  • You can visit Durban any period of the year - whether it’s winter or summer - the temperature in Durban always remain warm and sunny.
  • Durban might be a sleepy city, but because of its great all year weather it's also a leading events city for both music, culture and sport.
